A former Egg Harbor Township and Rutgers football player was sentenced to a dozen years in prison for his part in three armed robberies.
Tejay Johnson, 26, pleaded guilty in January to three counts each of armed robbery, armed burglary and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
He was among three former Rutgers’ students sentenced last week in a conspiracy that targeted students for drugs and cash.
Johnson received three concurrent 12-year terms for each of the robberies, and must serve at least 85 percent — or more than a decade — before he is eligible for parole.
During what
nj.com reported as “an unbroken, nearly seven-minute apology to his victims and family,” Johnson said he made a "complete fool" of himself and damaged his family name.
He also told the judge that after he lost football, he turned to codeine and marijuana, the new site reported.
Andre Boggs, 22, of Coatesville, Penn., also received the same sentence.
Kaylanna Ricks, 22, of Perth Amboy, received three years’ probation. She was accused of being the getaway driver.
Sentencing for three other Rutgers students —Lloyd Terry 23, of New Brunswick; Dylan Mastriana, 22, of Rio Grande, and Jianan Chen, 22, of New Brunswick, were postponed.
