Millville man killed by detective had a warrant for his arrest, records show

  • News
The Millville man fatally shot by a detective last week had a warrant for his arrest in a death-by-auto case, court records show. Jacob Servais, 19, was due in Gloucester County Superior Court on Sept. 6, stemming from a crash that killed his friend, 17-year-old Victor Manuel Garcia. He was charged with second-degree reckless death by automobile. When he didn't show up for his court date, a bench warrant was issued, according to court records that still have him listed as a fugitive. The Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is investigating the shooting that happened last Thursday, when detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office and Lower Township Police Department were in Vineland conducting what has been described only as "a law enforcement operation." It was not clear what brought the investigators to Cumberland County or if Servais was a target. Shelby Mott, who gave birth to Garcia's daughter three days after the teen's death, claims that Servais was again running from police when the incident happened. The Attorney General's Office is releasing no further information about the case while the investigation is ongoing, spokesman Peter Aseltine told BreakingAC, including whether Servais was armed. Mott insists he was not.
