Pleasantville police to test gunshot-detection system

  • News

Pleasantville residents can expect to hear gunshots Thursday evening.
But it’s just a test.
Police will begin testing the ShotSpotter audio gunshot-detection system in a last step before the system officially goes live.
ShotSpotter uses sensors to triangulate where a gunshot comes from, which is expected to help in shooting investigations. The system alerts police to shootings, letting them know where they are. Atlantic City has been using the system for the past few years.

Pleasantville is the first to get theirs after putting the expense up to a public vote.
Members of the department’s Firearms Training Unit along with ShotSpotter staff will conduct the testing, which is set to begin at about 6:30 p.m. in four separate locations.
Different firearms will be fired into pre-made bullet traps, which will not be a danger to the public, police said.
The testing will last about two hours.
