Phillies' Odubel Herrera arrested in domestic assault in Atlantic City

  • News

Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera was arrested Monday night after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend.
Herrera has been placed on administrative leave, the Phillies announced Tuesday, after news of the arrest broke.
The Phillies said they learned of the incident Tuesday morning, and immediately reported it to Major League Baseball, who put Herrera on leave.
β€œThe Phillies take any domestic violence accusation seriously, and strongly support the Joint Domestic Violence Policy agreed upon by MLB and the MLBPA,” the organization said.
Police were called to the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino at 8:33 p.m. for the report of a domestic incident, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
Officers found the 20-year-old victim from Philadelphia with visible signs of injury to her arms and neck, Fair said. She refused medical attention.
Herrera, 27, was found in his hotel room, where he was arrested without incident, according to the report.
Herrera β€” listed by his full name as David Odubel Herrera β€” was issued a summons for simple assault and released.
Herrera was picked up by the Phillies in 2015, after playing in the Texas Rangers minor league.
The speedy outfielder had been the Phillies starter, but a recent slump had relegated him to the bench. Scott Kingery has been taking over for him in center field.
