Atlantic City man indicted in naked attack on baby

  • News

An Atlantic City man has been indicted in a naked, drug-fueled attack on a baby last month, the prosecutor announced Wednesday.
Stephon Whitfield, 28, remains jailed in the May 6 attack outside Atlantic City's Carver Hall, which was captured on video.
The then-9-month-old suffered bruises, scratches and at least on displaced tooth in the attack, according to the affidavit.
A grand jury has now indicted him on third-degree charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police were first called to the 1300 block of Caspian Avenue for the report of a naked man banging on a door.
“Call them. Call them. Call the cops please,” a woman taking the video is heard saying.
“Don’t call the cops,” someone else says.
The mood changes however when the man bends down over a baby carriage with a 9-month-old boy inside.
The mother can be heard screaming.
“Oh my God!” the woman videoing yells several times. “Help! Help! Lock him up!”
The woman then says, “Oh my God, he’s hitting that lady’s baby.”
Another video posted to YouTube shows more of the attack, with the baby stroller being toppled as the man refuses to let go.
It is titled, “Atlantic City man bite baby lip off,” although the baby was not bitten.

Whitfield was believed to be under the influence of some kind of drug, according to the report.
“There’s no question that Mr. Whitfield was heavily under the influence of drugs,” defense attorney Stephen Funk said, adding that Whitfield was hospitalized for a time after.
He said Whitfield was getting treatment for his drug problem through Volunteers of America.
Several witnesses told police Whitfield was high on phencyclidine or PCP.
He has a history of drug charges, including a 2017 case for possession of PCP, to which he pleaded guilty. He was given a suspended sentence last year, court records show.
