Florida woman charged with murder in year-old death of mother in Cape May County

A Florida woman is jailed in the killing of her mother, who died a year ago in Cape May County.
Josephine Scheid is accused of using drugs to kill 58-year-old Gabrielle Michaelis, who died Oct. 31, 2018.
That December, the New Jersey State Police Homicide South Unit received information about the suspicious death of the Belleplain woman, according to State Police Col. Patrick Callahan and Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland.
The chief state medical examiner ruled the death a homicide Sept. 23, finding the cause of death was intoxication due to hydromorphone, alprazolam and lorazepam, according to the release.
Scheid, 36, was arrested without incident Friday, at her residence in Sarasota, Fla., with the assistance of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
She is charged with murder, computer criminal activity, abandonment/neglect of an elderly person, endangering an injured victim, criminal restraint, misapplication of entrusted property, perjury, tampering with evidence and obstructing the administration of law.
In May, Scheid added a frame to her Facebook profile photo that reads: “In loving memory of my beautiful Mom, this Mother’s Day. Love & miss you, Mom!”
She is now lodged in the Sarasota County Jail pending extradition back to Cape May County.
Sutherland and Callahan commended detectives from NJSP Homicide South Unit and the Prosecutor’s Office along with the Sarasota County and Manatee County sheriff’s offices.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the New Jersey State Police at 609-882-2000 or the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.
