Oakcrest student struck getting off school bus

  • News

Hamilton Township police are investigating after a high school student was struck getting off a school bus Monday evening.

The 15-year-old Oakcrest High School student was getting off the Sheppard school bus that was stopped in the northbound lane on Mays Landing-Somers Point Road at the intersection of Old River Road, police said.

Richard Brownell was heading south in a Honda Civic when he struck the Mays Landing teen, according to the report.

The student, whose name is not being released due to his age, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Cooper Health System in Camden.

Hamilton Rescue Squad, AtlantiCare Paramedics, JeffSTAT Transportation Services and the Mays Landing and Cologne fire departments assisted at the scene.

Greater Egg Harbor Regional Superintendent James Reina sent a message to parents Monday night about the incident.

He said the district was working with police and the transportation company to gather information.

"We will have counseling services available at Oakcrest High School in the morning," he wrote. "Any student who feels as though they need assistance should see either our guidance staff, a member of our Child Study Team or any of our professional counseling services."

No summonses have been issued at this time.

It was not clear if there was video of the crash.

An investigation will decide on any summonses issued to either Brownell, 79, of Selbyville, Dela., or bus driver Renee Myers, 60, of Millville.

The juvenile sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Cooper Hospital in Camden.
