Atlantic City man shot himself during armed robbery, police say

An Atlantic City man wanted in an armed robbery where he shot himself last year is now in jail.Thomas Bryant, 25, had only been out of prison about 2½ months when he allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint Oct. 20 in Atlantic City.He was arrested in that case Thursday, while trying to burglarize a vehicle in the Bally’s Atlantic City parking garage, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.Patrol officers were called to an alley in the rear of the 1300 block of Pacific Avenue at about 3 a.m. Oct. 20, when a man said he had been robbed of his money at gunpoint, according to the report.During the robbery, the suspect’s gun went off, striking him in the hand.He fled before police arrived.Later that day, Bryant check into the Inspira Medical Center in Vineland for a gunshot wound to the hand, according to the report.Hospital staff notified Vineland police. Bryant admitted he was shot in Atlantic City, Fair said.An investigation by the city’s Violent Crimes Unit led to Bryant being charged with aggravated assault, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and certain person not to possess a weapon.Bryant served two years and three months in prison in a drug case, state Department of Corrections records show.He was released from Northern State Prison Aug. 9.Bryant now is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting a detention hearing.
