Teen accused of killing Ventnor man indicted in separate assault

  • News

An Atlantic County teen, accused of fatally gunning down a Ventnor grandfather in 2018, allegedly attacked a youth worker in the detention facility where he was held.

Angelo Delgado was just 16 when he shot and killed 61-year-old Sunil Edla outside the man’s North Nashville Avenue home Nov. 15, 2018, according to charges previously filed against him.

He was arrested in Atlantic City the next day, after Edla’s stolen SUV was found there and the city’s Surveillance Center personnel tracked Delgado to a home a block away.

Delgado’s case was waived up to adult court, after the state successfully appealed Family Division Judge Susan Maven’s decision to keep him in the juvenile system.

During a brief hearing Friday, Delgado was arraigned on a second case, charging him with third-degree aggravated assault.

Delgado was in custody at the Harborfields Youth Detention Center in Egg Harbor City on July 30, 2020, when he attacked a worker there, according to the affidavit obtained by BreakingAC. He was indicted last month.

While the victim was trying to restrain another defendant who had just assaulted him, Delgado “ran up and began to assault the victim from behind by punching him several times,” the affidavit states.

“The victim then tried to restrain the defendant, but (Delgado) continued to resist and continued to try and assault the victim,” the investigator wrote.

Three other staff members witnessed the attack, which was also captured on video, according to the affidavit.

He pleaded not guilty Friday.

Defense attorney Mary Linehan also told the judge that she plans to file a motion in the homicide case. No details on that were given.

Assistant Prosecutor Kathleen Robinson told the judge she had hoped to start plea negotiations in the case, but that the defense has not made an initial offer, instead opting to file a motion.

Delgado, now 19, is currently in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, after his attorney previously asked he be moved there. That request was made in court a week before the attack. No reason for the move was given.

Delgado had just been paroled from an 18-month sentence at the Training School for Boys when he fled a required program in Vineland, and ended up in Ventnor with a gun and “an elaborate and sophisticated scheme to steal a car,” according to the appellate judges’ summary of the state’s case.

A .22 caliber handgun was found in the Atlantic City home where Delgado was arrested, according to the details of the case.
