Man gets 10 years in Atlantic City carjacking that ended in Linwood

  • News

A Philadelphia man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a carjacking that started in Atlantic City and ended with a crash in Linwood.

Kevin Wade, now 61, fled in the stolen vehicle just before 2 p.m. April 17, 2021.

The victim, a Deptford woman, was behind the wheel when Wade got into the passenger seat and tried locking the doors, police said at the time. The woman jumped out.

An officer was alerted to the incident when he heard the woman screaming and saw her grabbing onto the door of her vehicle before Wade took off from the beach block of Arkansas Avenue.

He led police on a chase through the city and into surrounding towns. The chase was terminated at least once for safety concerns.

A report of an erratic driver brought Linwood police into the chase. Wade refused orders to stop, then wound up losing control and crashing onto the front lawn of a Delmar Avenue home, which was struck.

Wade, who has been jailed since his arrest, pleaded guilty to first-degree carjacking.

At his sentencing last week, his defense argued for the sentence to be reduced to eight years.

But Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury denied that request, and sentence Wade to 10 years. He must serve at least 8.5 years before he is eligible for parole under the No Early Release Act.

Once released, Wade will be subject to intensive parole supervision for another five years.

He also must pay the victim restitution for the damage to her car.

for an additional five years. Wade was also ordered to pay restitution to the victim for the damage he caused to the car.
