Atlantic City man arrested after allegedly throwing gun during chase

An Atlantic City man was arrested and a loaded handgun recovered after a brief chase Friday, police said.

Michael Aybar-Fernandez, 23, rans after Officers Adrian Nunez-Santos and Riley Flynn tried to stop him outside an apartment building in the 500 block of N. South Carolina Avenue at about 5:15 p.m., Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

He ran back inside the building, and then was seen leaving out the back through a window, according to the report.

The officers saw Aybar-Fernandez throw a handgun onto the roof of a maintenance building as he ran, Aristizabal said.

Aybar-Fernandez was arrested a short disance away.

Officers found a loaded handgun fitted with a high-capacity magazine and hollow-point bullets where he was seen throwing the gun, according to the report.

He is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of a high-capacity magazine, resisting arrest and obstruction.

Aybar-Fernandez is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
