Brigantine police chase leads to Hammonton teen charged with DWI

  • Crime Courts

A Hammonton teen was charged with driving while intoxicated after his vehicle was found disabled in a casino parking lot.

Brigantine Police Officer Devin Findley was driving along Lafayette Boulevard at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, when a pickup truck passed him at a high rate of speed, police said.

The truck then sped through multiple stop signs without stopping, according to the report.

Findley and Officer Nicholas Crosson tried to stop the truck, but the driver sped and fled the officers, the report said.

The truck then left the road and struck the exterior of a local business near the intersection of 12th Street South and West Brigantine Avenue, causing damage to property, police said.

The vehicle then got back on the road, and continued speeding.

The shift supervisor told the officers to terminate the pursuit for public safety reasons as speeds continued to increase traveling out of Brigantine.

Crosson checked the outbound lanes of the bridge and then turned on Harrah’s Boulevard where he saw the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of Harrah’s Casino. It was now apparently disabled due to damage, police said.

Two people were standing outside the vehicle and jumped into the rear seat when they saw the police car, according to the report.

Both were apprehended without incident and the vehicle was impounded.

A17-year-old from Hammonton was later charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, eluding police, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and nine other traffic summonses.

Police did not indicate what the weapon was.

The passenger, also a teenager, was charged with curfew violation and issued a traffic summons for failing to wear a seatbelt.

Both were released to parents with summonses to appear in court.
