Bridgeton men sentenced in shooting of State Police detective

Two men who opened fire on a State Police detective during a confrontation at a Salem County mobile home park have been sentenced, officials announced Thursday.

Detective Richard Hershey was seriously injured when he was confronted by an angry mob while investigating a home invasion at the Harding Woods mobile home part around 10:30 p.m. April 25, 2020.

A woman was beaten and robbed in the attack.

Hershey was shot at more than a dozen times, with most of the shots coming from a third gunman, 30-year-old Tremaine Hadden, also of Bridgeton.

About 15 people in five vehicles confronted Hershey, who identified himself as law enforcement, according to the investigtion.

That same month, a jury convicted Hadden

A jury convicted Hadden of aggravated assault, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to possess weapons and riot.

He faced more than 40 years in prison. He is now in South Woods State Prison on a 37-year sentence. His release date is April 10, 2048.

Hutchings, 25, was sentenced to 13 years in prison in January, under a plea agreement, which includes eight years for aggravated assault and five years for unlawful possession of a weapon. He also is in South Woods, with a release date of Sept. 12, 2028.

Warner, 23, was sentenced to seven years for aggravated assault. He is in the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility with a parole eligibility date of April 8, 2026, and a maximum date of June 23, 2026.

Both men had to testify as conditions of their pleas.

Detective Richard Hershey has since healed and returned to duty.
