A Galloway Township man who allegedly turned his home into an elaborate cockfighting operation will stay in jail.
Police arrived to a large group of individuals — many trying to flee. Summonses were issued to 50 people.
Madera was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
There were about 50 roosters in various degrees of health being held in crates, storage boxes and bags. Four dogs were also taken from the home.
More than $37,000 in cash was seized.
The number of charges coupled with Madera's criminal history called for Madera to be detained, Assistant Prosecutor Joseph More told the judge.
Madera has five prior convictions, most related to violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act out of Pennsylvania.
He also has a resisting arrest, which defense attorney Stephen Funk said was related to a motorcycle stop.
Funk argued that Madera is a self-employed business owner of a drywall and painting company, and provides for his seven children, ages 5 to 17. Two are special needs.
The defense also pointed out that the public safety assessment — which is used to help determine whether a defendant is held pretrial under bail reform — recommended Madera be released.
But that did "not reflect all the facts and circumstances of the case," Judge Pam D'Arcy said in ordering him detained.
His criminal history spans 12 years, with Madera not being law-abiding since reaching 21, she added.
Madera now will remain jailed pending the outcome of his case.
